Founded in 1994 as the Real Estate and Infrastructure Division of the Mahindra Group, Mahindra Lifespaces has carved out its niche as a leader in sustainability. Since 2014, the company has been maintaining a full portfolio of green-approved projects, and has announced that it will build only net-zero energy, water and waste buildings by 2030 – two decades earlier than the 2050 timeframe in the Paris Agreement. It has residential venture under the premium brand Mahindra Lifespaces and Mahindra Happinest, which targets the budget-conscious segment, along with its integrated cities and industrial clusters under the Mahindra World City and Origins by Mahindra collections with the inclusion of India's first corporate industrial city, which was developed in collaboration with the City of Chennai and the City of Jaipur.
The company is among the first group of real estate Indian companies to obtain the approval of the Science Based Targets initiative for its emission goals. In 2016, it founded the Sustainable Housing Leadership Consortium to encourage the adoption of green building standards in the real estate industry. Lifespaces has realised the need to strive for eco performance which is being driven from design, commissioning and across the development, and not simply dictated by marketing, in a project across several cities, including Mumbai, Pune and Chennai, and with Japan's Mitsui Fudosan on new residential propositions.
